A Very Little Thought Of Technique To Reset Your Chops for Trumpet Players (and all other brass players too)

First of all, if you haven't been to MY SITE, you really should do that first and click on the products page and video tutorials.

Quite a long time ago, I played Busch Gardens for the entire summer. 5 shows a day, 6 days a week. Thursday was our only day off and we mostly drove to Virginia Beach for R&R.

Rewind: The college year had ended for me that year and it was the beginning of June. I had slacked off on my playing and was gearing up for the big 12 hour drive in my broken down Chevette.

Between my drive and also looking for an apartment in Williamsburg, I ended up not really playing for about 4 days.
THEN, I started rehearsals. I thought they would be just a few hours a day, but they were 10 freakin hours each day.....like DRUM CORPS!

So, my chops were like mush, no endurance, had not played for 4 days and then suddenly went 100 MPH!

Needless to say, I crashed and burned. I did eventually catch up, but the entire summer, my chops were never "there"!
I also felt sore. I had horrible endurance. I did not have the power that I was used to. I sorta felt like superman with Kryptonite hanging around my neck.

I did the classical Italian Show in the Italy section of Busch Gardens. In fact, I still have a video of me doing this and you can check it right above.

Although I sounded good, I was suffering.
I never could get my chops back and in fact, I even thought practicing more on my day off would help. WRONG!
Now, that I know quite a bit about chops, range, and endurance, I know what the solution for me would have been: All I needed to do was call in sick for 2 days straight right before my day off which would have given me a total of 3 days break. This would have allowed my burnt out chops to recuperate and I would have come back strong....stronger than ever.

So, heed my story of ego and willpower. I tried to force and will my chops back, but it didn't work.
Sometimes, You just have to let go, quit for 2-3 days so your CHOPS CAN RESET!

If you have been going for weeks or ....like what happened to me...MONTHS, and your chops feel weak, stiff and just not normal, RESET YOUR CHOPS and don't play for 2-3 days.
You won't regret this advice...ever!
